The Caretaker Summary

We argue that The Caretaker better illustrates the adequacy of the bargaining set, another solution concept introduced by Aumann and Maschler ; It is a play which traces the relationship of three men in a dilapidated house. His contribution builds on the work carried out by Howard , , who also considered the problem of coalition formation, but from a different perspective than CGT. We claim to the contrary that The Caretaker better illustrates another solution concept in CGT, namely the bargaining set later, we shall define this concept introduced by Aumann and Maschler, ; We make this claim on the basis that, as shown by Maschler , and Kahan and Rapoport , bargaining processes in settings like The Caretaker often end in a finite time and with payoff configurations close to elements of the bargaining set. We therefore show that The Caretaker can be used to illustrate the adequacy of the bargaining set as a solution concept in CGT.

The Caretaker Review 2010

The play depicts three men — a tramp named Davies and two brothers, Mick and Aston — who each in their own way seem trapped entirely in their own individual worlds. The plot is minimal: Aston brings Davies back to his junk-filled flat after the latter has been involved in a fight. And it is impossible, in the current climate, to tell any story about the search for a home without feeling aware of the shadow cast by the burnt husk of Grenfell Tower. This has striking resonance in a world where we see a virulent and xenophobic nationalism arising in response to a global refugee crisis and the perceived challenges of mass migration.
