Posted by GratuiTous Sep 9, Reviews My first audio interface I purchased had ridiculously weak pre-amps. It was a Fast Track Pro. After much trial and error with of trying different mic cables, different microphones, it came down to one conclusion; the pre-amps were weak. This was the solution to my weak pre-amps. It allows for an Input volume, allowing you to crank it hard to get warmth out of your vocals, and then the Output volume, which allows for lowering the volume to prevent unwanted distortion.
It has a dial which allows you to switch to different settings such as guitar, vocals, piano, bass etc. On the bottom, it has a couple buttons such as phantom power, a PAD switch to cut down a hot signal, low cut to remove unwanted bass, and phase reverse. And this is the back of the Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic On the left is the power insert. This is powered by the 9V power adapter provided.
So from your Audio Interface you plug into the Output of the picture above. Then from the Input it will go to your microphone. If you are using a dynamic microphone all you do is just adjust the volume and you are good to go. If you are using a condenser microphone you have to turn on the Phantom Power in order for your mic to work. And then same thing, just adjust your volumes. This thing has been a BIG help in order to produce louder vocals with more control over the volume! It did exactly what I want it to, allow for louder vocals.
This allows for some cool practice recordings by really cranking the input and lowering the output, and just fiddle around with another piece of hardware to see how it works! I wanted to experiment with it as a way to have a tube preamp for my solid state guitar combo amps. It was interesting, but the sound got brittle and crackley when I turned up the gain.
This was disappointing. I know that each particular tube can be slightly different from each other. I decided to try replacing the Beringer branded 12AX7 with some other tube.
There are many options. It was gratifying to see that not only did the MIC and 12AU7 produce distortion with the gain cranked up, but it was enough gain to be useful, and was a much smoother and pleasing crunch sound. When combined with various settings of my guitars and the amps this was useful and good sounding.
Hello i just bought a ultragain mic and i dont know how to connect to my system so it bring out sound for me or do i need to get another sound card to bring out sound from my system. Please help me. Audio Interface 2. Many many thanks for your post! Sad thing is, here in Brazil all gears cost much more due to taxes, including this pre-amp.
Anyway, thank you again for sharing your knowledge! I just bought a m-audio fast track for my shure SM57 and I got the same problem. The preamp of it is so bad that I have to turn the mic gain knob all the way up. If I buy a preamp, do you think the problem will go away? I just want to be able to get the mic record me singing high notes.
Also, which one do you think is better, Behringer Tube Ultragain Mic or the art tube? About connecting the preamp with the interface, are you using a XLR female to male cable in the pic above and plug it into the mic input of the interface? Am I wrong? Please help me, it would be truly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you. I know how it is with the microphone and pre-amp. This pre-amp from Behringer has helped me tremendously though giving me more flexibility with the volume of my vocals.
