LUIS DE CAMOES OS LUSIADAS PDF

Research has shown him to be a member of the impoverished old aristocracy but well-related to the grandees of Portugal and Spain. He is supposed to have been, in his youth, in territories held by the Portuguese in Morocco, but it is uncertain whether he had been exiled or was there because it was simply the place for a young Portuguese aristocrat to start a military career and to qualify for royal favours. It is also assumed that his youth in Lisbon was less than subdued. King John III pardoned him in , when he was under arrest for taking part in a street brawl in which a royal officer was assaulted. He surely did not make his fortune there, since he complains often in his poetry about his bad luck and the injustices he met with.

The work describes the discovery of a sea route to India by Vasco da Gama. The 10 cantos of the poem are in ottava rima and amount to 1, stanzas. The action of the poem begins after an introduction, an invocation, and a dedication to King Sebastian. The voyagers spend several days in Melinde on the east coast of Africa, and, at the request of the king of Melinde, da Gama recounts the entire history of Portugal, from its origins to the inception of their great voyage Cantos III, IV, and V.

The Lusiads

Lisbon , Coimbra or Alenquer are frequently presented as his birthplace, although the latter is based on a disputable interpretation of one of his poems. His mother later remarried. For a period, due to his familial relations he attended the University of Coimbra , although records do not show him registered he participated in courses in the Humanities. He frequently had access to exclusive literature, including classical Greek, Roman and Latin works; he read Latin and Italian, and wrote poetry in Spanish. It is also likely that an indiscreet allusion to the king in his play El-Rei Seleuco , as well as these other incidents, may have played a part in his exile from Lisbon in He traveled to the Ribatejo where he stayed in the company of friends who sheltered and fed him. He stayed in the province for about six months.
