As evidence for this in terms of Dzogchen meditation, there is the practice of the Dark Retreat. The visions that appear in such a retreat do not arise out of the total darkness itself as a cause, but from the inherent energy of the Nature of Mind. The traditional Dark Retreat in Dzogchen lasts for 49 days, the same duration that the deceased consciousness spends in the Bardo after death. However, it is possible to do dark retreats for shorter periods of time.
