Ultrasonography for measuring rectus abdominis muscles diastasis 1. PURPOSE: Preoperative imaging evaluation may be useful for determining the position of recti abdominis muscles before their correction. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonography to measure the width of rectus abdominis muscle diastasis. Rectus diastasis was measured in seven levels along the anterior rectus sheath by ultrasound after sustained deep inspiration and after expiration.

The degree of widening needed for the diagnosis is controversial, with the degree of abdominal protrusion rather than the degree of widening often defining whether it is pathological. Additionally, the normal width varies depending on the level at which the linea alba is measured narrower at the xiphoid and inferiorly approaching the pubic symphysis , and widest at the level of the umbilicus.
Diastasis recti occurs primarily in newborns and pregnant women, although it can also occur in men and postpartum women Diastasis recti is not a true hernia and, therefore, not associated with risk of strangulation. Repair abdominoplasty is primarily done for cosmetic reasons based more on degree of abdominal protrusion rather than the diastasis itself.
It is performed by folding the linea alba and suturing together to create a tighter abdominal wall. Please Note: You can also scroll through stacks with your mouse wheel or the keyboard arrow keys. Diastasis recti , or rectus abdominis diastasis , is defined as a gap of about 2. Diastasis of the rectus abdominis muscle most frequently occurs in newborns and pregnant women ; however, it may occur in any adult woman or man. In the newborn, the rectus abdominis is not fully developed and may not be sealed together at midline. Diastasis recti is more common in premature newborns. In pregnant or postpartum women, the condition is caused by the stretching of the rectus abdominis by the growing uterus. It is more common in multiparous women women who have had multiple pregnancies owing to repeated episodes of stretching.
