Comment to claim! Shipping tomorrow! I daydream after breakfast While the spirit of egg and toast Knits together a length of bone As fine as a wheatstalk. Later, as I postpone weeding the garden I will make two hands That may tend a hundred gardens.
I need ten full moons exactly For keeping the animal promise. I offer myself up: unsaintly, but Transmuted anyway By the most ordinary miracle. Ce livre!! Vous l'avez lu? But a devil of a bargain it has turned out to be in terms of daily life. We gave up the aroma of warm bread rising, the measured pace of nurturing routines, the creative task of molding our families' tastes and zest for life; we received in exchange the minivan and the Lunchable. Because that, darling, He makes fresh for us every day without a lot of dubious middle managers.
Everywhere you look, joyful noise is clanging to drown out quiet desperation. How do you become quiet? How do you slow down? Barbara Kingsolver has expanded my view on the culture of food in our country. Written in , this book is a foundational piece if you want to understand how what we eat and how we come to acquire our food has such a broad impact on our environment, economy, family, relationships and our health.
At times I paused reading this one because I wanted to read it within the season she was writing about. Doing so made it that more relevant and thoughtful. Thanks for this day, for all birds safe in their nests, for whatever this is, for life.
I had a very slow reading month. I coordinated a workshop to improve the care of kids with asthma, I started my Masters program, visited my Granddaughter for her 7th birthday, listened to a lot of podcasts and read some books for school. Anybody else have a slow reading month? Whose read any Barbara Kingslover? Could this historical connection be enough to save [her] home from ruin?

To be hopeful, to embrace one possibility after another — that is surely the basic instinct. Crying out: High tide! Time to move out into the glorious debris. Time to take this life for what it is. Relax your shoulders, shake your head and spine like a dog shaking off cold water.
Tell that imperious voice in your head to be still. At brunch yesterday, this book came up. I lived in Cape Town, ZA for a semester during law school for comparative study. Rwanda was a bit different. BUT, I kept going back because the country is incredible; the culture is beautiful, the history intense, the land is Eden.
But: one of my early visits back was a short-term mission trip. Before coming to law school and learning the realty of racial division, new colonialism, and so much more, I was sucked in to the First World saviorism. This is NOT fun to admit. But, so many give into it because of a desire to help.
I now vehemently oppose mission work like this. This book shows the violent clash of cultures mission work produces. It is complex, raw, and painful. And unnecessary. While fictional, it plays on real themes that should serve as a warning to all. Everyone should pick it up! Yesterday, I started my third book of the week. I love those kinds of weeks. This is one that has been on my list since it published last year.
I love everything Davis Sedaris writes and am already hooked. I recommend all three if you are looking for reading material! What are you reading this summer?
