Frederick Pohl won the first award. In The Locus Poll received responses. In January, I wrote about Barry B. Longyear , the winner of the John W. Campbell Award in and explored the vast amount of fiction he published in and The two quickly realize that despite their hostility and indoctrination, they needed to work together in order to survive.
When the Jeriba died giving birth to its child, Davidge used the lessons he had learned from the dead Drac to raise the child with an understanding of its own culture in a world where the only civilization was what Davidge created. Eventually, Davidge and Zammis are rescued and separated, with each being returned to their own planet. While Longyear could have ended the story with their separation and return to their own cultures, although Zammis had never directly experienced its own culture, he instead continues to follow the characters.
Although the war with the Drac is over, Davidge is seen as a Drac sympathizer and human society has no place for him. He eventually travels to the Drac home world, where he discovers that Jeriba and Zammis belong to a much more important family than he had realized, although Zammis has been unpersoned due to his strange upbringing. The only other novella of the year with a respectable run of reprints in anthologies four times since original publication, compared to eleven for "Enemy Mine" is Hugo nominee "The Moon Goddess and the Son" , by Donald Kingsbury; I don't recall ever reading it. The only other novella to feature on both Hugo and Nebula shortlists for the awards made in was "The Battle of the Abaco Reefs" by Hilbert Schenk, which I also have not read and which seems not to have been republished since, er, Actually I read Ken MacLeod's Cosmonaut Keep even more recently, but his intelligent saurs are from Earth and friendly rather than being hostile alien lizards. Longyear's local inspiration here is certainly Gene L. Coon's Star Trek episode "Arena" , which was inspired by Frederic Brown's short story with the same title, but replaced Brown's spherical alien with a reptilian Gorn. Unlike in either version of "Arena", however, the human and alien are not doomed to fight to the death.

Post a Comment. Please note this review is for the novella Enemy Mine , not the novel. Sweeping the major American novella awards, Barry B. A film produced six years later a film which unfortunately is hindered by poor special effects , the exposure took the story beyond the book world and moved it into the attention of the general public. Opening mid-action—mid-punch even, Enemy Mine begins with a soldier of Earth in hand to hand combat with an alien Drac after their fighter jets have crashed on the surface of an uninhabited planet. Towering tidal waves, scarce food, and little wood for making fire, the harsh living conditions quickly force the two to cooperate or die.
