Numerous and frequently-updated resource results are available from this WorldCat. Thoroughly updated with new content, figures and citations, the third edition addresses major themes in contemporary evolutionary biology - including the history of evolution, evolutionary processes, adaptation, and evolution as an explanatory framework - at levels of biological organization ranging from genomes to ecological communities. Douglas Joel Futuyma born 24 April is an American evolutionary biologist. Futuyma graduated with a B. He received his M. Futuyma began his career in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University in and was appointed Distinguished Professor in Slobodkin Collegiate Professor in that department from before returning to Stony Brook in Futuyma served as the president of the Society for the Study of Evolution in , of the American Society of Naturalists in , and of the American Institute of Biological Sciences in He has served as the editor of the scientific journals Evolution and Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics.
Futuyma's research examines speciation and population biology , particularly the evolutionary interactions between herbivorous insects and their plant hosts and the implications for evolution of host specificity. Futuyma is well known for his success in teaching and public outreach. Futuyma has also written for a popular audience in his book Science on Trial: The Case for Evolution , originally published in , in which he discusses the creation-evolution controversy.
Futuyma is openly gay. He has said that he was initially surprised at the lack of negative career consequences, and that LGBT visibility is important to progress on gay rights.
Futuyma was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Futuyma was selected as a Guggenheim Fellow in and as a Fulbright Fellow senior scholar in , awarded for travel to the University of Melbourne in Australia.

The classic evolutionary text updated to reflect the fast-moving field of bioinformatics. Extensively rewritten and reorganized, this new edition of Evolution —featuring a new coauthor: Mark Kirkpatrick The University of Texas at Austin —offers additional expertise in evolutionary genetics and genomics, the fastest-developing area of evolutionary biology. Directed toward an undergraduate audience, the text emphasizes the interplay between theory and empirical tests of hypotheses, thus acquainting students with the process of science. It addresses major themes—including the history of evolution, evolutionary processes, adaptation, and evolution as an explanatory framework—at levels of biological organization ranging from genomes to ecological communities. Douglas J. He received his B. Futuyma is the author of three previous editions of Evolution , as well as three editions of its predecessor, Evolutionary Biology.
