The book sees fine art as a modern invention due to social transformations during the 18th century. David Clowney, writing for Contemporary Aesthetics summarizes the central thesis of this book. What Shiner has added is a detailed proof of the Kristeller claim using the methods of intellectual, social, cultural, and art history. Other traditional cultures still have a similar system. In that system, an artist or artisan was a skilled maker or practitioner, a work of art was the useful product of skilled work, and the appreciation of the arts was integrally connected with their role in the rest of life. Art as we have generally understood it is a European invention barely two hundred years old.

Return to Book Page. With The Invention of Art , Larry Shiner challenges our conventional understandings of art and asks us to reconsider its history entirely, arguing that the category of fine art is a modern invention—that the lines drawn between art and craft resulted from key social transformations in Europe during the long eighteenth century.

Shiner's text is scholarly but accessible, and should appeal to readers with even a dabbler's interest in art theory. Wilson, Art Documentation "A lucid book. Get A Copy. Paperback , pages. Sort order. Jan 26, Francesco Fabi rated it it was amazing. A necessary book. Simply put this is probably one of the most important things you will read about art history. The implications of such an analysis, which I think the author could have explored further and more audaciously it is as if he remained within the boundaries of the modern concept of "Art" are tremendously vast.

Personally I have always shared Gombrich's anti-idealist citation introducing The Story of Art "there is no such thing as art" Nov 22, John rated it liked it. A breath of fresh air in an otherwise stifling artistic environment. Do you mean there are really people out there who don't buy into the story presented by the modernists?

Jan 04, Elin rated it liked it. Lots of information packed in a nice way to read. So much information though, that my brain needs to take a break every 50 pages to process everything, so quite heavy anyways.

Aug 10, Gianluca Braschi rated it it was amazing. Terribilmente interessante: si legge tutto di un fiato. Mar 20, Leon Limpens rated it it was amazing. An indispensable book for understanding the transformation of art into eurocentric Art and the runaway-evolution of the art markets. Oct 29, Mduritz rated it it was amazing. Dec 07, Felipe rated it liked it.

Jul 06, David Livingstone added it. A great book. Also a very needed critique of the mythos of "art" in Western civilization. There have been many attempts to offer various versions of art history, such as feminist, Marxist and so on, but Shiner's book looks at the evolution of the term itself, which sheds light on this very Eurocentric idea and its pretensions.
